Springtime is the perfect time to go on day trips, weekend trips and longer trips in central Texas. The weather is beautiful, the days are getting longer, and the wildflowers are blooming. One of my new goals since moving to Austin, Texas is to explore as much as possible!
6 Places to visit in Texas Hill Country
Bluebonnets
Bluebonnets and Texas Hill Country go together like bread and butter 🙂 Bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, are absolutely beautiful and can be found throughout Texas Hill Country from about late March to mid- April depending on the location and the weather.
Lyndon B Johnson National Historic Park
The Lyndon B Johnson National Historic Park in Stonewall tells the story of our 36th president. The site is huge including the Texas White House (LBJ’s ranch), barns filled with LBJ’s cars, JetStar (plane LBJ flew in during his presidency), LBJ’s birthplace, walking trails, a living farm and more. You will need to obtain a free driving permit at the visitor center and if you wish to tour the Texas White House you will need to purchase a ticket at the airplane hangar. They also participate in the NPS Junior Ranger program and they have a state junior ranger program.
Wineries along Hwy 290
There are countless wineries located along Highway 290 from Austin to Fredericksburg. You will find wineries to fit everyone’s tastes and style. A few of my favorites are Messina Hof and Fiesta Winery.
Hike Pedernales Falls State Park
Spring is the perfect time of year to hike in Texas Hill Country because the weather is still cool. At Pedernales Falls State Park, there are various hiking trails that range from easy to challenging. There is a .5 mile Twin Falls Nature Trail where you can stop at the scenic overlook over the falls or tackle the 6 mile Wolf Mountain Trail that winds along the canyons.
Explore Wildseed Farms
Blanco State Park
Located along a one-mile stretch of the spring-fed Blanco River, Blanco State Park is a wonderful place to spend the day. You can swim, fish, camp, hike, picnic or watch the wildlife. You can rent tubes and canoes at the park store or you can bring your own. The park is just an hour from Austin and San Antonio.
My daughter loved the shallow wading pool next to Falls Dam. The cool water felt so good on a hot summer day and we cannot wait to visit again soon. This site does have the Texas state junior ranger program.
