On our recent Norweigan Cruise Line cruise to the Western Caribbean, we made a stop at Roatan, Honduras. My family and I had been really looking forward to this port, however on the day of it was raining. Ugghh, but we went ahead with most of our plans.
We booked our private tour with Rony’s Tours. You can pay for the vehicle, driver, and guide for the whole day and they will take you to see and do what you would like. We love booking private excursions for that reason. During your trip, your guide will tell you about the island and it’s people. We had Rony’s mother as our guide! We loved our day and learned so much from her.
Our Tour
Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hang Out
Daniel Johnson’s is a small animal sanctuary. All the staff was super nice and had a love for their job. After you pay admission, a guide will take your group through the facility informing you about all the animals and how they ended up there. You get to go in the cage with the Capuchin Monkeys who will jump on you, reach in all your pockets, and generally run amuck. It was hilarious!
Next, we went into the enclosure with the Scarlet Macaws. We each got to have the macaw stand on our arm and take pictures. So awesome!
However the star of the facility is the sloths. Everyone in our group got to hold Olivia, the sloth. We were not rushed, got to take as many photos as we wanted, and receive priceless sloth hugs/snuggles. It was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I highly recommend this experience and it was only $10 per person.
Horseback Riding
My daughter really wanted to ride in horses in the ocean and she got to ride through both the jungle and then onto the beach and through the water. The horses were well trained and a young guide even lead my daughter’s horse. The guides were great, very accommodating, and took several group photos with our phones.
Island Highlights
Our guide stopped at a cashew tree and we were able to taste the cashew apple. I did not realize that cashews grew on trees or that they also contained a fruit that you could eat.
We saw Rony’s house and drove through one of the poorer areas of the island. Our guide and driver also stopped at several places to take photos including the Roatan sign and an overlook spot where we could see our ship.
Unfortunately it was raining really hard, so we scrapped our plans to visit a local beach and headed back to the ship early. Even though it rained and poured at times we had a wonderful time on the island.
Please let me know if you have any questions about using a private tour company in Roatan. We had the best experience with Rony’s Tours. We have always enjoyed our private tours more than any excursion we booked through the cruise ship.
