I had talked previously about sight words and how practicing flash cards is no fun! Building on making learning fun, S recently had a water balloon fight to practice CVC words, but you could use the same idea for learning letters, numbers, sight words and more.
What is a CVC word?
CVC words are words that follow the pattern consonant-vowel-consonant. These are considered the simplest words and the starting point of many phonics programs.
How to Play?
On a hot day, we filled up a bunch of water balloons. I wrote out CVC words, some that she knows and some new ones, in chalk on our driveway.
There are a couple ways to play, you could call out a word and have your child throw the water balloon at the correct word. Or you could have your child read you the word and then throw the balloon.
S had a lot of fun throwing the water balloon and getting her feet wet! Plus any leftover water balloons are fair game! 🙂

Wow! This is so creative and awesome. I remember when I was little, I had some issues with reading and my teacher at the time suggested that my mom record me reading. I still have no idea how that helped (LOL), but it did. I love to see creative things like this for children.

What a great tip! I am going to have to try recording my daughter and see how that goes. It’s always interesting to see the different ways that children learn.
