A couple weeks ago I shared about our girls trip to Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco, Texas. This week I have another fun destination in Waco the Waco Mammoth National Monument where Columbian Mammoths are in situ (still in their original position within the bone bed). This paleontological site and museum is part of the National Park System. We learned so much about Columbian mammoths and their fossils.
The Waco Mammoth National Monument is the nation’s only recorded discovery of a nursery herd of Columbian mammoths! The only way to see the dig site along with the Columbian Mammoth fossils in situ is to go on a guided tour, there are one every 30 minutes. The tour does cost, but it was well worth the cost of admission.
The Waco Mammoth National Monument also has a junior ranger program where your child completes a set amount of pages in the workbook before getting sworn in as a junior ranger. This is a great way for kids to learn more about the site you are visiting and helps keep them entertained. If you want to learn more about the junior ranger program click here.
My advice is to arrive early in the day to beat the crowds. No food or drinks are allowed inside the dig site because the humidity is being controlled. They are not currently digging at the site, however, they should be starting back up soon and when they do it will be posted on their website.
