All the tips and a list of what to do and see at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada including Fire Wave.
Valley of Fire State Park in southern Nevada is filled with stunning red rock formations, beautiful panoramic views, hiking trails, and petroglyphs. It is located about 50 minutes from Las Vegas and 2 hours 20 minutes from Zion National Park. The park has red rock formations that are made from Aztec sandstone and on a sunny day, these red, orange, and pink formations look like they are on fire, giving the park its name.
How much time do you need for visiting Valley of Fire State Park? We spent about 4-5 hours visiting the park on our way from Zion National Park to Arizona. However, you could definitely spend a whole day exploring the park.
What to See and Do at Valley of Fire State Park
With beautiful scenic views everywhere in the park, I do not think that you can go wrong with any of the hiking trails or viewpoints, however here are some of the top spots to visit in the park.
Fire Wave Trail
You may not find Fire Wave hiking trail on the park’s map, but it is located at parking lot 3 on Mouse’s Tank Road/White Domes Road on your way to White Domes Loop Trail.
This is one of the most popular trails at Valley of Fire State Park. It is a 1.5 mile roundtrip out and back trail with the most gorgeous views of red/orange and white striped rocks. We really loved this trail!
White Domes Loop Trail
This 1.25 mile loop trail is located at the end of Mouse’s Tank Road/White Domes Road. There is a fairly large descent at the beginning of the trail. Also, a climb back up at the end to the parking lot. It is not a difficult hike just be aware of the descent and climb. The rocks and views along the trail are stunning.
This was one of our favorite hikes and a great place for kids because there are lots of rocks to climb on along with a short slot canyon.
Rainbow Vista Trail
This easy 1 mile roundtrip out and back trail has panoramic views of Valley of Fire at the end.
Scenic Drive
You do not even need to get out of your car to take in the beauty of Valley of Fire State Park. Just drive along Mouse’s Tank Road/White Domes Road and take in the views.

Tips for Visiting Valley of Fire
- Bring lots of water, sunscreen, sunglasses/hats, etc. Since most of the trails are across rock/sand and around/through the rock formations with very little shade.
- I recommend visiting in late fall/winter/early spring. In summer, some of the trails may close due to extreme heat.
