All the tips and reasons you should visit Pedernales Falls State Park near Austin, Texas.
Pedernales Falls State Park is well-known in central Texas because of the tranquil Pedernales River that flows over and around huge slabs of limestone. It is a great place to cool off during the summer and to relax and recharge. The state park is located about 30 miles west of Austin which makes it an amazing place for an afternoon swim or hike Visiting is definitely a bucket list item and you can see more items on my Texas bucket list here.
What to do at Pedernales Falls State Park
While most visitors tend to explore the falls area of the state park, there are several hiking trails and a swimming area at the park.
Hiking Trails
There are several hiking trails at the state park. The majority of visitors take the short trail to visit the Pedernales Falls which includes an overlook area and a trail down to the falls. Other trails include the 0.5 mile Twin Falls Nature Trail that takes you to the scenic overlook over the falls. Or if you are looking for a challenging trail Wolf Mountain Trail is 6 miles that wrap around Tobacco and Wolf mountains and winds along small canyons created by creeks.
Swimming
Access to the swimming area is a strenuous 1/4-mile (or more) hike. It includes steep rock stairs with no handrail down to the swimming area. The river is rocky and water shoes are highly recommended. Please note swimming is only allowed in designated areas at Pedernales Falls State Park.
Paddling
Tube, canoe, or kayak the Pedernales River. You can put in at the swimming area or Trammell’s Crossing Trail.
Camping
There are several RV/tent camping sites to choose from with water and electricity hookups. The park also has primitive camping sites.
Tips for Visiting
- Bring plenty of water, hats/sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- If you plan to swim or cool off in the river, bring water shoes.
- Central Texas is extremely hot during the summer, I highly recommend you hike early in the day or save your hiking for fall/winter/spring.
- Texas State Parks and Natural Areas are utilizing a park pass reservation system currently. Due to the popularity of Pedernales Falls, day passes for the weekends/holidays fill up well in advance so be sure to book your park pass early.
