All the tips for hiking the beautiful Hanging Lake Trail in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
Last summer we visited Glenwood Springs, Colorado. One of the main reasons we made sure to include Glenwood Springs in our Colorado road trip was because we wanted to hike to Hanging Lake. I had seen all the pictures of the beautiful lake and knew that it was a must. And I am so glad that we did because it was completely worth the tired legs and early morning for the amazing views.
You must have a permit to hike to Hanging Lake Trail. The trail is very popular so be sure to book your permit online well in advance of your visit. Reservations/permits to hike Hanging Lake Trail are available on Glenwood Springs’ website.

How was Hanging Lake Formed
The lake was formed by a geologic fault which caused the lake bed to drop away from the valley above it. The turquoise color of the lake is caused by carbonate minerals that have dissolved in the water. The edge of the lake has been built up from dissolved carbonates as the water flows over it.
Where to Stay in Glenwood Springs
We stayed at the Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge which allows you to enjoy unlimited access to their hot springs pool and complimentary breakfast.
The rooms at the lodge are large, clean, and updated. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time at their hot springs pool which was the perfect place to ease your tired muscles after hiking Hanging Lake Trail.
