Enjoy a day with family taking in the beautiful sand dunes and sand sledding at Monahans Sandhills State Park.
Did you know there are other places to go sand sledding than White Sands National Monument in New Mexico? The Monahans Sandhills State Park in Texas is a fun spot to go sand sledding and to walk along beautiful sand hills.
You can sled just about anywhere in the park, however, if you go to the picnic spot at the end of the road there are lots and lots of hills to explore. This area is also near the campground where you will find bathrooms.
You can rent sand discs from the visitor center. The sand discs we found worked best on pretty steep, tall hills. However, the discs moved fairly slow across the sand as opposed to a sled over snow/ice. Our whole family enjoyed sand sledding and can not wait to visit again soon! But it is so tiring walking up the hill over and over – sand is really hard to walk in uphill!
I could not get over how different the landscape looked. It felt like we were in the middle of the desert in the Middle East. I could just imagine camels walking along the top of the dunes or a scene right out of Aladdin.
Tips for Sand Sledding
Take the sand disc down a steep hill where there is smooth sand. Do not walk in your sled path!
Wipe the sand off and wax the bottom of your disc.
Sled down the hill in your same path from before because it will make your sled go faster and farther.
Every couple of trips down the hill, wipe the sand off your disc and re-wax your disc.
Be prepared to be tired from walking up the hill to slide down!
Enjoy the fun of sand sledding!
