It had been raining here for a couple days and we really wanted to get out of the house. I thought S would enjoy making some art in the rain. Chalk plus water always makes such vibrant colors. I also was interested to know what food coloring would do in the rain. So, S put on rain boots and a hooded jacket and out we went out in the rain. She absolutely loves the rain and was very excited that I asked her to go out into it.
We took two pieces of cream cardstock and placed them on the ground to get wet. While we waited, S drew on the driveway with chalk.
Once the paper was wet, S drew on one with the chalk. With each stroke of the chalk it left behind vibrant color. Once the chalk was on the paper the rain did not wash it off.
When her masterpiece was complete, S moved on to the other piece of cardstock and dripping food coloring. As soon as the color hit the cardstock, it burst out. The food coloring made a beautiful design and as the rain hit the cardstock the color bleed, moved and washed. S kept saying this is so cool! As soon as S finished with the “painting” we moved the cardstock into the garage to dry. *Side note: the food coloring washed off the driveway with the rain and left no stains.
I love each piece of art, they are both totally different. And no trek outside in the rain is complete without stomping in puddles!

No I don’t take my kids out in the rain since they hate getting wet especially their hair. Maybe if I show them your post how fun it is to play in the rain they’ll want to do it.

No rain! Maybe hooded jackets?

I always loved to play in the rain! As a matter of fact, I played in the rain last week. I needed to fertilize the yard and it’s best to do it right before it rains so the fertilizer won’t burn the grass. Well, I got caught in a downpour and felt like a kid again!

Oh it’s so fun to feel like a kid again! Thanks Alli

Such a great idea. I don’t have kids but I have a niece who loves rain. I will definitely have to do this with her! It looks so much fun. I’ve pinned it for later!

My baby is a little too young to be out in the rain, but I will keep this in mind for the future. So neat. I never would’ve thought of it.

My son loves to draw on the terrace as well and watch the chalk get wet. Children can really enjoy the outdoors whether sunny or not =) #magicmoments

Wow, love the idea of the food colouring one. My son loves puddles, but I’m not so keen on the rain – I reckon I could live with it for a bit to do some artwork though.
mybigfathappylife says
It was so much fun! Maybe you could stand in the garage or under a carport while your son played close by.

I love love love this! I just bought some big chunky chalks to use outside – when it’s sunny. Never thought about using them in the rain – we could have gone out and done it yesterday, only my kiddos have stinking colds again and probably shouldn’t be playing in the rain right now! #supermommyclub
