We took a two week family trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park over the summer. We traveled with my parents from Louisiana and met my brother, sister-in-law and their little boy at the park. Taking a trip together is a great way to spend time with family that may live far away while experiencing something fun and different that everyone can enjoy. While the logistics of planning a trip with more people can be harder than planning a trip with just your family the memories make it worth it. We had so much fun during our trip that we cannot wait to plan another family trip!
Multi-Generational Trip Tips
- Ask everyone what their must see and do are for your trip. You may find that everyone’s must do list overlaps or that you have many different answers depending on the type of trip you are taking. Be sure that everyone in your group has the freedom to embark on the adventure of their choice. I prefer to build a schedule of activities for our vacations with room, so that we can also enjoy spur of the moment adventures.
- You do not always have to be together. You may find with having different families and ages together, that you will have different interests and abilities. For example on our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park, my father and brother wanted to go fishing, so they went off a couple times to try and catch some fish.
- Eating meals together is a great way to catch up with each other.
- Be patient and considerate. Tension can run high when you are together for a long period of time. I love my family, however next trip I think I am going to have a “safe” word. That way when I feel like I am at a breaking point I can say my “safe” word and walk away for some alone time.
- Try something new. I always think it’s so much fun to try something new especially when you are on a vacation. On this last trip, my sister-in-law went horseback riding with us for the first time and I went canoeing for the first time.
- Remember that chances are not everyone has the same travel budget. Be sure to discuss the cost of your planned vacation ahead of time with everyone and be respectful.
No matter where you go on your multi-generational trip be sure to have fun, enjoy making memories together and take lots of photos!
