Lowes usually offers about once a month a free Build and Grow Clinic for Kids. Each of the clinics is themed, we have built Disney Planes: Dusty and El Chupacabra, a fire truck, racecar, train, claw game, and birdhouse so far. At each clinic, you turn in the release form and your child is given a package that includes wood pieces, nails, stickers, and directions based on what you are building that month. Your child will also be given a hammer, goggles (optional) and a Lowes apron.
In our experience the directions are very easy to follow. We have found that it is easier to assemble while sitting on the floor than to use the table that is provided, because the table gives when you try to hammer making it difficult to get the nail in all the way.
When your child has completed building the item, you will need to turn in the hammer to a Lowes employee. Your child will then receive a certificate of completion and a patch that can be ironed on to the Lowes apron, which is also yours to keep.
I do recommend that you register your child online ahead of time and print off the release form to bring with you the day of the clinic. If you do not register and all the spots are filled, you may have to wait until 15 minutes past the start time (which is how long they hold the kits for those that registered) before you will be given a kit. You can check the schedule of upcoming clinics and register your child online here.
The recommended age for the Build and Grow Clinics is 5 years and up. However, in my experience Lowes will not turn your child away. The biggest concerns with the clinics are the small nails (which children could put in their mouths) and obviously the swinging of the hammer. My daughter was 3 when we started taking her to the clinics and it is difficult for her to get the nails in, but we helped her. Now, she’s a pro and builds the projects by herself.
We have attended several clinics with our daughter in the last eight months and have enjoyed each of them. S has loved building the various items and is always asking us when the next clinic is.
Have you attend one of Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinics? What did your family think of it?
