A delicious dessert to help celebrate Mardi Gras – King Cake Bread Pudding!
There is a restaurant in Baton Rouge that we used to frequent quite often and one of our favorite dishes is their King Cake Bread Pudding served only before Mardi Gras. I have been known to have my husband stop and pick up the dessert several so that we can enjoy it.
However, over the years the slices have gotten smaller and the price has gone up and with us having moved to Texas, we do not get to indulge in our favorite dessert. It was time for me to try and recreate this super yummy Mardi Gras favorite!

- 16 pieces of bread, cubed (toasted)
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 Tbsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 4 oz. cream cheese
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-4 Tbsp milk
- colored sugars/sprinkles
- Whisk eggs, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Add in milk.
- Add cubed bread and combine until bread coated.
- Melt butter and mix with brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Spread half of bread into 9x13 pan and spread cinnamon mixture over the bread. Add second layer of bread.
- Bake for 60-70 minutes at 350 degrees.
- Combine butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and milk until smooth.
- Top bread pudding with icing and colored sugars/sprinkles.
- I doubled the icing recipe.
Yummy! Pinning this one! I live in KingCake World down here near NOLA so yummy and tempting, but this is a great twist and fun addition!
All the king cakes are so yummy! I really need to go get a strawberry cream cheese one before Mardi Gras 🙂
My grandma used to make bread pudding for us, but it didn’t look ANYTHING like this. This looks like it’s one step away from heaven. I can’t wait to give it a try. ~Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Natalie! The frosting adds so much to the bread pudding!
Bread pudding is my absolute favorite dessert, but I have never heard of the Big King version. I need to do a bit of research.
King Cake is traditional for Mardi Gras. It’s made of a cinnamon filled dough in the shape of a hollow circle with a glazed topping and sprinkled with colored sugar. This bread pudding is just a combination of the two! Thanks for stopping by.
This sounds very good. I never had it before but whenever I go back to New Orleans I’ll need to try it out. Thanks for the recipe Paris!

I used to live just outside of NOLA and every year I’d have to go buy a King Cake. Now, I’m in east Texas and I make it myself. This pudding looks divine! I will definitely be making it for our Mardi Gras celebration!
