Slide Rock State Park is located just north of Sedona in Oak Creek Canyon. We decided to visit this state park because of the famous slide rock and the ability to splash in Oak Creek, which is one of S’s favorite things: water. We arrived at the park right after it opened. I have read that the park can become quite busy to the point of having to close the parking lot during the summer months. The park used to be an apple orchard and it does still produce fruit. From the parking lot it is a little bit of a walk to the creek, you pass two separate buildings with bathrooms, a little store, the apple orchard, old pieces of machinery on display, and the original house, cabins and packing barn of the orchard. We visited the area in May and let me tell you the creek water was freezing! While it did not seem to deter S from wading in the water, I was not so daring. My husband walked with S all over the creek. Please note the rocks in the water are extremely slippery! S found puddles of water that contained tadpoles and had so much fun trying to touch them. We also spotted birds, butterflies and even a red dragonfly. The park is famous for its natural sandstone water slide.
My husband, along with a few other visitors, decided to brave the cold water and go down the slide. While the water slide did move you along, it did not rush him as fast as I thought it would. He said he is so happy that he went down the slide, it was great! The views are amazing at Slide Rock State Park between the creek, the red rocks, and the trees. Even with the water being extremely cold this park is still worth a visit. If you are looking to travel to Arizona, you may enjoy my other posts about our trip which can be found here.
