I haven’t shared some of our homeschooling activities lately. Here’s a look at our letter M week!
The first thing I do when we sit down on the first morning is to look at a flash card with the letter M on it. Then we talk about different words that begin with that letter. So for the letter M: monkeys, mice, marshmallows, Mickey, maps and monsters.
I used the following printables, linked to their original source, throughout our week mixed in amongst the other activities.
Marshmallow Building Activity
I pulled out a bowl of mini marshmallows and a cup of toothpicks and let S start building. She ended up building different shapes and was so proud of herself. My favorite was the pentagon which we used to hold her My Little Ponies. S said a pentagon looks like a house. Yes, yes it does.
Map Reading Activity
We have a United States Map puzzle that we looked at and pointed out where we lived, where S’s cousin lives and different places that we have visited. Next I pulled out an old Magic Kingdom map and we talked about if we wanted to get to X how we would find out where it is located. Then if we were at X spot on the map how would we get to Y or where is the nearest bathrooms, etc. S enjoyed this activity and I think part of it was because I used a map, Magic Kingdom, that she is familiar with and loves.
Arts & Crafts: Make Monsters Out of Play Dough
S used the orange scented play dough that we had made during our O week to make monsters. I gave her some candy eyes (googly eyes would also work), pipe cleaners, and bottle caps and let her create some monsters.
Science: Marshmallow Science Experiment
We put marshmallows in glasses of hot water, cold water and Sprite to see which would dissolve. S insisted on a straw to swirl the marshmallows around. We made predictions before we got started and learned that the hot water was the only liquid that dissolved the marshmallows.
Math: Monkey Counting
S counted the monkeys from the Monkeys in the Barrel game. She also hung them from one to the other as she counted.
Arts & Crafts: Googly Eye drawing starter
I added three googly eyes to a piece of paper and gave S a bucket of crayons and markers to see what she would create.
Arts & Crafts: Painting with Marshmallows
S picked out the paint and I gave her a large marshmallow for each color and watched her create different paintings. My favorite is the one with multiple apples on it (kinda looks like the Apple icon).
Math: Hot Chocolate Counting Mugs
I printed out the hot chocolate counting mugs and mixed them up. I handed each one to S asking her what number does it say and then asking her to put that many marshmallows in the mug.
We also put together puzzles, played a game of Mouse Trap and read some books.
This was an extremely fun week! I love spending time with S with organized activities. It makes our time less stressful, knowing that I have multiple planned activities for her to do, but also taking my cues from her on if she likes an activity or not.

Those are some scary (cute) monsters! What a great way to learn the letter “M.” I remember playing with the monkeys in the barrel when I was growing up. I love toys that span generations.

Such great activities! I have major respect for those of you who homeschool…I don’t know that I have the patience for it! These will come in handy when the little one gets a little bigger, I definitely want to supplement and reinforce what she’ll learn in school!
Thanks for linking up with us at #MommyMeetupMondays! Hope to see you next week!
