Easy natural dye for beautiful blue Easter eggs using red cabbage.
Some of my favorite colors are teal and turquoise. These colors are difficult to recreate using dyes and food coloring, but did you know that you can get all kinds of beautiful hues using natural ingredients? You can make beautiful teals and turquoises using, of all things, red cabbage!
Supplies
- a dozen hard boiled eggs
- 1 head of red cabbage
- 5 cups water
- 4 Tbsp white vinegar
- edible gold paint
- paintbrush
Roughly chop a head of red cabbage and place in a large pot. Cover cabbage with 5 cups of water. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 30-45 minutes. Cool completely before straining out the cabbage. Then stir in 4 tablespoons of white vinegar.
Place the eggs in a deep baking dish and pour the dye over the eggs. Each egg needs to be completely submerged. If you need to add additional water to ensure that the eggs are covered.
It may take an hour or more to get your desired color. Since the bottom of the eggs make contact with the baking dish, you will want to rotate the eggs every half hour or so to even out the color. If you are going to leave your eggs in the dye longer than an hour, I recommend placing the dye in the fridge.
Once the eggs have dried completely, you can leave them as they are or splatter them with edible gold paint (you should be able to find in the cake decorating section of your store). Lay the eggs on a few sheets of paper towels. Dip a dry paint brush into the paint and run your finger over the bristles for beautiful splatters to appear. Let the paint dry before splattering the opposite side.
Have you tried natural dye for Easter eggs before?
