We have used various advent calendars including our favorites Playmobil and Lego Friends. With each of these advent calendars you get a box that has 24 doors to open, one each day, with a small toy behind each door. Also included is a small cardboard piece that makes a backdrop to enact scenes on.
For a couple years, S got the Playmobil Advent Calendars and I loved these. The figurines and animals were fun to play with. S had so much fun creating scenes.
In 2013, Playmobil did not release a new Christmas/Winter advent calendar, so we went with one from Lego Friends. This advent calendar was a little different because S got to assemble a figure or item each day. The directions were on the inside of each day’s door. While most of the items were easy to assemble and recognizable as Christmas, others we struggled to figure out what the item was supposed to be. But S really enjoyed the calendar and played with the pieces throughout the year with the rest of her Legos.
With no new Playmobil advent calendar (you can still pick up previous years here and here), we are going to use this Lego Friends Advent Calendar this year. S was so excited and wanted to start the count down already, but December 1st will be here before we know it.
Does your family have a favorite advent calendar?

I love the Lego Avent Calendars! My girls get the chocolate calendars each year. They wake up so excited for that piece of chocolate.
I had chocolate ones when I was little and loved to have chocolate in the morning.
I love the Lego Advent calendars, we have gotten the Friends and Star Wars ones in the past. We took a break from them last year, because they are a little expensive (esp the Star Wars one!), but may get them again this year.
The Lego Star Wars one is so cool, but yes everything Lego tends to be a little pricey.
I plan on being intentional about Advent this year. Different calendars give me a few options to work with. Thanks for this.
Thanks Kim. The advent calendar is so fun for kids!
I’ve been toying around with celebrating advent for years. My oldest son is 11 and my baby boy is 7. I think this is the year to start the Christmas tradition in our home. Thanks for the reminder.
I hope you sons enjoying having an advent calendar! My daughter loves it.
I’d never seen the Lego Advent calendar but I love it! I can certainly see how the children would enjoy putting together a new piece every day. I just love family Christmas traditions, they make me feel all warm and fuzzy. I’ll have to show this to my daughter for the grands.
Thank you Shirley. I love holiday traditions too and we have a lot of them 🙂
That Lego Advent Calendar is so cool! I have a small Christmas tree that I’ve had for over 25 years with the ornaments tucked into little drawers on the base of the tree. One ornament is hung on the tree each day. But I have a feeling that my grands would like the Lego one much better. Thanks for sharing, Paris.
Your advent tree sounds so cool. I bet your grands love it.
My daughter would love this. She’s a big fan of the Lego Friends.
It is so fun to get a little lego toy each day 🙂
My daughters loves Lego friends and play with them almost every day. I’m pretty sure they want to add more to their collection.
Yes and they can bring their other lego friends to play on the calendar scene!
I love the concept of Advent calendars! You know I hadn’t ever hear of one until I lived in Germany for a year. Crazy i know! I really want one this year. I saw Sbux has a cute one! 🙂

Advent calendars are such a great way to get in the holiday spirit! So cool that Lego has one!
Thank you Madison! My daughter loves having an advent calendar!
What a cute idea! I love advent calendars! We got a tree this year to put little candies in. I can’t wait for December 1st so we can start using it!
That sounds like fun! I remember have chocolate advent calendar when I was growing up and loved to open a piece of chocolate each morning.
I never had this but wish I did! Love the different choices you have depending on your kids likes.
I always had a chocolate advent calendar growing up 🙂
We love advent calendars. We have done both the chocolate ones and the Playmobil calendars over the years, we have quite a nice Christmas Playmobil collection as a result! 🙂 My kids are now much older teens, but we still love these calendars and I was considering a Lego one for this year. 🙂 Fun post!
Thank you April. We have loved the advent calendars…I really hope that Playmobil releases a new Christmas one next year! I hope you find a lego one that you and your kids will enjoy! 🙂
This looks like a great idea for kids! I just wrote a blog post about advent calendar gifts for adults — kids aren’t the only ones who like them! http://thoughtstipsandtales.com/2014/11/19/adult-advent-calendar-gift-ideas/#more-3032
That’s so true!
Did not know about these!!! Will have to remember for next year!
The kids would love them! 🙂
