When we travel, one of our splurges for breakfast are strawberry cheese danishes. While I make a breakfast cheesecake for Christmas morning that is similar in taste to cheese danish, I had not made any other danishes at home. It was time to change that!
For my husband’s birthday, I thought I would surprise him with strawberry cheese danishes. They were really easy to make and even my daughter helped me.
The crescent roll dough lends the danish to have a airy texture to it, while the cheese mixture is creamy with the sweet fruit on top.
This recipe is perfect to use up fresh fruit before it goes bad. I am really anxious to try other fruits and see how they turn out!
- 2 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 Tablespoon corn starch
- 2 Tablespoon water
- 1 packages (8oz) cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
- Combine strawberries, 1/3 cup sugar, cornstarch and water in a saucepan over low heat. Continuously stir mixture until it is thickened, slightly smashing the berries as they cook.
- In a bowl mix together cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla.
- Take crescent dough from container, but do not unroll it. Instead cut the dough into 8 slices.
- Place each slice of dough on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
- Press the center of the dough to create a well. You may need to stretch it some.
- Place a teaspoon of cream cheese mixture into each well, creating a slight well in the cream cheese mixture.
- Add a teaspoon of strawberry mixture into each well.
- Bake at 350˚ for 12-15 minutes.
