My older boxer, Sugar Ray, turned 11 at the end March which is a pretty big milestone for a boxer. He is my first baby and has been my daughter’s best friend since her birth. He is such an important part of our life and always showed us unconditional love. We really wanted to celebrate his birthday by making him an extra special birthday cake!
Life Update: Sugar Ray passed away late last week. He was a fabulous companion and always there for us during the best times and the challenging times. We are so thankful that he was a part of our life. He will be terribly missed by us all. We love you Sugar Ray.
The cake is easy to make and did not take long. While the cake is food safe for humans it will not taste very good.
To say he loved the cake would be an understatement. He devoured it and while he generally likes human food there are things he won’t eat (like popcorn, vegetables and fruits). Tip: If possible, have your dog eat their cake outside because s/he will make a mess!
This recipe will continue to be made in our house to celebrate our dogs’ birthday!
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/8 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 1 egg
- Preheat oven to 350˚ F.
- Combine all ingredients.
- Pour cake mixture into an 8" round pan that has been greased with cooking spray. *I used two mini tart pans so that each of my dogs had their own cake
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. *I baked 10-15 minutes using the mini tart pans
- Let cool on a wire rack before removing from pan.
- After cooling, add 1/2 cup of greek yogurt as frosting if desired.
Do you celebrate your dog’s birthday? Have you made them a cake before?

Saying goodbye to a pet is one of the hardest things in life. Sugar Ray was everyone’s best friend and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He was truly a very special dog.

That looks like one happy pup! This is such a cute idea. We don’t have a dog but if we did, I would probably celebrate birthdays. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday this week!
