Imagine this: valleys of wildflowers with rugged mountains peaking out from behind, lakes sparkling in the summer sun beckoning you to jump in, miles of trails just waiting for you to explore and jaw dropping views to take in. Welcome to Heber Valley, Utah.
Instead of visiting a crowded touristy destination this year, how about instead going back to nature! Trust me there are so many outdoor activities to do, that your children will not be on their phones once (unless it’s to snap a photo of all the fun along the way).
Are you wondering where Heber Valley is? It’s located in north Utah, just 15 minutes from Park City and 50 minutes from Salt Lake City.
My family always says that I am the planner when it comes to vacations. It is one of my favorite things to do: sit down and pour over what an area has to offer. So I thought I would share what my trip to Heber Valley would include:
I would be waking my family up early (yes, I am one of those that do not to sleep in on vacations) and hitting the hiking trails. With over 200 miles to choose from it’s going to be a hard choice but the Pine Creek Nature Trail which winds along Pine Creek and through the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains looks like the perfect one for my daughter to hike along with us. One of her favorite things to do is look for animal paw prints/hoof prints.
While I love to go biking, I am not confident enough to go on a long bike ride with my daughter just yet. She’s still working on balance without training wheels.
In the afternoon, you’ll find me heading to Homestead Crater which may be one of the coolest (or warmest) activities that you can experience! What is Homestead Crater? It’s a geothermal spring hidden in limestone rock that created a beehive shaped dome around it. There is a hole in the top of the dome that allows sunlight and fresh air in, however because of the geothermal spring the interior stays 90-96˚F. Sounds like the perfect place to relax and enjoy a swim after a day of hiking.
My daughter loves to go fishing, so we would be hitting up local streams and lakes to see what we can catch. Although, I am not sure if my daughter loves the fishing so much as being near water and sticking her feet in it.
We recently discovered my daughter’s love of horses last summer (I think almost every little girl loves horses) when we visited old friends and she got to go for a ride. Now if we go anywhere that there is horseback riding it’s a must do activity. So my daughter will love that we can go on a guided horseback ride in Heber Valley.
I am a sucker for a historic train ride with a spectacular view! While on the train ride you will find me trying to capture a photo of the Historic Heber Valley Railroad as it goes around bends and curves along the route.
Since I live in the south, visiting a snowy destination is our only way to experience snow. Unless you count the few flurries we may get once every five years. So if we visited Heber Valley during winter, taking in powdery slopes by snow tubing or skiing would be our favorite activities. Following a day enjoying the snow, you’ll find us warming up with some hot chocolate [remember we are from the south :)].
I always find videos so helpful when looking to book my next trip because they can give you so many ideas to add to your list.
Disconnect from digital devices, get outside and enjoy nature with Utah’s Switzerland.
