I have lived in Louisiana for 10 years and had only seen an alligator during our tour of Jungle Gardens at Avery Island (and at the zoo of course). Therefore I thought it was time to rectify that. There are so many different alligator farms and tours in Louisiana to choose from. So, when I saw a Groupon for Kliebert’s Alligator and Turtle Farm, I decided to try them out first.
We visited Kliebert’s at noon on a Sunday, we waited in the gift shop checking out snakes, baby alligators (4 day+) and pursuing the displays. When we had arrived we asked about how long until the tour and was told 15 minutes but we ended up waiting over 30 minutes before the tour started.
Our first stop on the tour was the turtle pond. Talk about a lot of turtles! Our tour guide had food that he threw in and as soon as he did the turtle took off towards it.
Kliebert’s farm started in 1957 when Harvey Kliebert took alligator eggs from the swamps. These eggs turned into 200 female and 50 male alligators. The farm has been a family business from the beginning.
On our next stop, we got to see our first alligator. She is one feisty alligator and decided to separate herself from the rest when she escaped from the big pond. She has also fought with every alligator that they tried to add to “her” pond.
Truthfully, I am scared of alligators – all those teeth, strong jaws and they tend to blend into their surrounding. This guy had all kinds of plant debris on top of him to camouflage in.
All along the path, our guide told us stories about the alligators that call the farm home. The tour was also educational; learning about alligators, their habit, their diet, and the alligator hunting season.
After seeing the older alligators, we got to see the three to five year old alligators. I loved this old airboat – how cool is it?
We also got to see their Nile Crocodile, some regular farm animals (mules, chickens, rabbits, and goats), and a raccoon.
S’s favorite part was at the end when we got to meet their nutria and a couple tortoises. The nutria loved our tour guide and acted like a dog just wanting to get some love and attention. I learned several things during our tour, but one I was surprised by was that Crocodiles and Alligators can jump – like as high as they’re long. So definitely stay back. Overall, I was happy with our tour that last about one hour. We got to see lots of alligators, our guide engaged several alligators, and the tour was educational.
Kliebert’s is located in Hammond, Louisiana at 41083 West Yellow Water Rd. Check their website for current hours of operation.

Great photos! How close did you get to the alligators?

Thank you Keisha! There was a fence between us and the alligators. Many of them were right on the other side of the fence.

What an extraordinary sight. I remember being fascinated seeing them in the everglades in Florida years ago.

Wow! That would definitely make for a cool family outing, though I’d be happy to keep a little distance between me and the alligators!
