A couple years ago, I made marshmallow fondant to decorate S’s birthday cake.
When I turned the fondant out to knead, I gave S the fondant covered spatula to play with (please make sure that the fondant is not hot anymore before giving to your child). S immediately discovered how sticky it was.
Before I knew it S had her hands completely covered and was sticking them together and pulling them apart. She kept telling me how stringy and sticky the fondant was. I could tell S was trying to figure out why and how it was causing her hands to stick together.
Since the marshmallow fondant is safe to eat (itβs just marshmallows and powdered sugar), it is a great sensory item for those whom have children that stick items in their mouth.
I was surprised at how easy it was to clean off of Sβs hands. She rinsed her hands and then washed them with soap. The marshmallow fondant did not leave any residual stickiness.
I love having S help in the kitchen and with this sticky discovery it was all the more fun!
So fast forward to last week, S and I decided to try making marshmallow playdough using the marshmallow fondant recipe but using cornstarch instead of powered sugar.
I picked up some 4th of July marshmallows at Target 50% off and planned on separating the three colors and making red, white and blue playdough. However, S had a better idea and wanted all the marshmallows together, so we ended up with purple playdough.
We made our playdough in 2 batches, if you would like to do the same cut the ingredients below in half.
8 oz. package of marshmallows
2+ cups cornstarch
4 tablespoons water
food coloring (optional)
We put the marshmallows and water in a microwave safe bowl, and microwaved for 30 seconds. The marshmallows will expand. Mix in food coloring (if desired) and cornstarch. You want the playdough not to be sticky, but you do not want to put to much cornstarch in that the dough becomes stiff.
Grease your hands and counter with cooking spray, then knead your dough – adding more cornstarch as needed. S helped with the kneading of the dough.
Because S wanted to play that she was making cookies, I put some cornstarch on the counter to act as flour. I pulled out stars and hearts cookie cutters. S went to town rolling out the dough and cutting out her cookies.
What is your favorite activity to do with your child in the kitchen?
