What to do in Texas Hill Country this fall – its the perfect time to visit Hill Country with the weather cooling off and festivals in full swing.
Fall is a great time to visit Hill Country in central Texas because there is an abundance of things to see and do! Hill country is centrally located to all regions of Texas with an easy road trip or there are plenty of low-cost flight options for a getaway. In the fall, the weather is beautiful and you may catch the trees changing colors.
Fall Events in Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg, Texas always seems to have a festival going on in the Fall. Be sure to check their website for all of the fun events they have planned. Below are a couple of their big events during the fall.
Gillespie County Fair – celebrates its Annual Fair in late August
Oktoberfest – celebrated in downtown Fredericksburg with German food, German and local beer, and German entertainment in early October
Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest – is a celebration of Texas food, wine, beer, music, specialty booths, food court and fun for all in late October
Wineries along Hwy 290
There are countless wineries located along Highway 290 from Austin to Fredericksburg. You will find wineries to fit everyone’s tastes and style. A few of my favorites are Messina Hof and Fiesta Winery.

Take a Hike
Fall is the perfect time of year to take a hike because the weather is starting to cool off. At Pedernales Falls State Park, there are various hiking trails that range from easy to challenging. There is a .5 mile Twin Falls Nature Trail where you can stop at the scenic overlook over the falls or tackle the 6 mile Wolf Mountain Trail that winds along the canyons.
At Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, you can explore nearly 11 miles of trails, beautiful scenery, and rock formations. Enchanted Rock is a massive pink granite dome rising above Central Texas! You can take the .67 mile challenging trail to the top of Enchanted Rock where you will be rewarded with 360-degree views and rare vernal pools at the top that are home to the delicate fairy shrimp and rock quillwort!
Lyndon B Johnson National Historic Park
The Lyndon B Johnson National Historic Park in Stonewall tells the story of our 36th president. The site is huge including the Texas White House (LBJ’s ranch), barns filled with LBJ’s cars, JetStar (plane LBJ flew in during his presidency), LBJ’s birthplace, walking trails, a living farm and more. You will need to obtain a free driving permit at the visitor center and if you wish to tour the Texas White House you will need to purchase a ticket at the airplane hangar. They also participate in the NPS Junior Ranger program and they have a state junior ranger program.
