Growing up whenever we had large family get-togethers my great aunt always brought desserts or if you visited her house she always had something sweet to serve you. One of my favorite bars that she makes is the 7 Layer Bar also called Magic Bars.
My favorite cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch, so I thought it would be fun to adapt the 7 Layer Bar to include Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal instead of the traditional graham crackers. I also made a smaller batch of bars using an 8×8 pan which works well for our family of three but if you were making the bars for a party, you may want to double the batch.
7 Layer Bar
This 7 Layer Bar is so yummy but rich. I tend to cut my pieces smaller – about 2×2 squares. This recipe is adaptable based on your preferences or if you just want to switch up the ingredients. For example, if you do not like white chocolate substitute out peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips.
- 1 3/4 cups crushed Cinnamon Toast Crunch (crumb like consistency)
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup shredded coconut
- 1/2 can (7oz) sweetened condensed milk
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Spray 8x8 pan with cooking spray.
- Mix Cinnamon Toast Crunch with butter and then press into the pan.
- Evenly layer milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips and coconut.
- Pour sweetened condensed milk over the pan.
- Bake for 20 minutes.

These look absolutely delicious and I’m sure I will be making them soon!!! BUT my question is why they are called 7 layer bars? They don’t have 7 layers so I’m a bit confused.
mybigfathappylife says
7 Layer Bars is what my family has always called them you can add in or out toppings as you wish.

No, nothing is missing but if you want to add additional toppings you definitely can. In my family they have always been called 7 Layer Bars.

These look absolutely amazing. I have a horrible (or wonderful depending on how you look at it) sweet tooth and I need these in my life. I would have never thought to use Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I have to know how it will taste. I’m not huge on Cinnamon, but that cereal is more sweet than spicy I think. Anyway, thank you for sharing at #mommymeetupmondays!
mybigfathappylife says
Jules, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch does not give the bars an overly cinnamon flavor. I hope you give the recipe a try!
Anne says
According to my grandmother, the name Seven Layer Bars came from the old original recipe that had seven layers placed in a pan in this order: graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, sweetened condensed milk, butterscotch flavored chips, semi sweet chocolate chips, flaked coconut and chopped nuts.
mybigfathappylife says
That sounds like the original recipe, but I have never been a fan of the nuts, so they never make it on. 🙂
