We have a wonderful Asian restaurant in town: cute décor, very clean, great food and amazing customer service. We always have the same waiter and he makes us feel special by remembering our usual order and bringing S little treats. While we are regular customers, we only eat dinner there about once a month and sometimes I need an Asian fix at home.
I love sweet and sour chicken, so when I found this recipe from Made It Ate It Loved It on Pinterest I added it to our meal plan. However, I had in my mind that the recipe was for the crock-pot and sadly it is not.
I thought for a minute of how I could turn it into a crock-pot recipe and then I remembered this Orange Chicken recipe from The Pursuit of Happiness that I had previously made with great results. I pulled ideas from both recipes and changed a couple ingredients and not only did it work but it was so good! We literally wanted to lick the sauce out of the crock-pot. I hope you like it as much as we did…enjoy!
- 3 chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1/3 cup flour
- salt and pepper to taste
- vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 4 Tablespoons ketchup
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoons minced garlic
- To make the sauce whisk together sugar, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce and garlic. Set aside.
- Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a skillet (just enough to cover the bottom of the pan).
- Pour the flour in a low, small bowl and add salt and pepper. Cover the chicken breast chunks in the flour mixture and shake off the excess.
- Add the chicken to the skillet to brown (the chicken does not have to be all the way cooked since it will be added to the crock-pot).
- Add the browned chicken to the crock-pot and cover with the sauce mixture.
- Cook on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours. Serve over rice.

This was delicious! I sauted the chicken in sesame oil instead of vegetable oil, and added about 1/4 of a cup of pineapple juice to sauce which added a bit of depth to the overall flavor. The last 45 minutes of cooking, I threw chopped up red & yellow bell peppers, onions and cubed fresh pineapple in. The whole family raved, even our picky 5 year old!

Awesome! I am so happy that your family enjoyed!
